Right off, I want to wish you all a happy and safe week. I’m not religious about the holidays, but as my mother and stepfather are Jewish, I’ll say Happy Hanukkah. But like my father’s family, I celebrate Christmas. Like I’ve said, I’m a mix of both cultures, and I’m happy to take the best of both.
On Christmas, we’ve got an early afternoon game at Staples Center against the Boston Celtics. It’s going to be a big game, and people have been hyping it. The last time we played them — in the NBA Finals — we didn’t leave on a good note, so we’re going to try and finish that this time around. Maybe set a tone or send a message, even if it is just one game.
After the game — and a win will be a nice present for us in Los Angeles — I’m hoping to have my family come over to celebrate Christmas. I have a big enough house that can accommodate everybody, that’s what I got it for. I used to live in a condo, but I needed a bigger pad, so everybody could come over and be together. The celebration is probably going to find its way to my house in the evening. My family cooks. My cousin Kalen Harvey is a chef at the Ritz-Carlton in Pasadena, and he cooks along with my grandmother. So they all bring food over, and we’ll enjoy it. It’ll be mostly family, but depending on who’s in town, there may be some friends who come over later.
Last week, I talked about strong and independent women. So what do I admire in women, personally? First and foremost, they need to be genuine. I like girls who have good intentions, who don’t want anything, who just want to be themselves, and who have a good nature to them.
I also like to be around good people, whoever they are, especially in our situation. People can be assets or liabilities, and I want my associates to be assets, so we enrich each other’s quality-of-life. A good personality is key.
Physical attraction is important when it’s somebody you’re interested in. I love good teeth, eyes that sparkle and skin. Those are the first things I notice. A nice warm smile is key. Pretty eyes. And I really notice beautiful skin. That starts it off for me, before I see the curves. But I like curvy women, too. Come to think of it, there is someone I would definitely like to meet who I haven’t yet — Alicia Keys. What a beautiful talent and woman. She sang the title song for the new Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, and she’s been in action movies like Smokin’ Aces, so I figure she’d make a great Bond girl. Alicia is one smoking piano player and to be honest, I wish I did play piano. I took lessons when I was younger but stopped when I wanted to focus on basketball. I realized it takes a long time to really practice and be proficient at piano. I would love to pick it up again, it helped relax me, and it’s a cool talent to have. Bet you didn’t think you’d hear that.
I mentioned last week that I agree with President-elect Obama that we have to work to get off our addiction to oil and change our energy policies. In college, my car was a Mercury Mountaineer, an SUV. It was nice but simple. Since then, and because of my interest in helping the environment, I got a Hybrid Escalade from the good people at the Martin Automotive Group in West L.A. It’s my main car. But I also have a Mercedes S550, a big body model, although it has a sports package on it. I interchange them just to get some variety. But when it’s the off season and I want to do some recreational activity, maybe on the ocean or on a lake, I’ll use the Escalade, which is great for hauling stuff. One thing I’d love to learn to do is to surf but I haven’t learned yet.
Both cars are white with black interiors. I like that combo. They’ve both got a clean look even when they’re not so clean, know what I mean. Black tends to show a lot of spots. The dark leather interior is easier to keep clean. I’m not into fancy wheels and rims, ‘cause I don’t want to attract that type of attention. I already attract enough attention playing for the Lakers, lol.
I’m a big fan of the guys at Martin Automotive, they’ve been really supportive of my various community endeavors and camps. That’s important to me. I’m also a big fan of my agency WMG. What makes a good sports agent? In my opinion, WMG is one of the best at what they do. Arn Tellem, my agent, has been around, and the agency handles pro athletes across the board from basketball to MMA to baseball and action sports. What’s key is years of experience, and relationships. Also, the other clients give them leverage — if you’re not going to treat them honestly and fair with one client, when the next client is a free agent, they’re not going to do business with you. Having that power to get fairness and to get the most out of the people making the decisions is key.
Well, I’ve got to get ready for Christmas and that big game. Thanks for your letters and feedback. In upcoming weeks, I’m going to talk about my basketball camps in Israel and about the beautiful girls who come from that great country, like SI Swimsuit model Bar Refaeli.
Be safe and come see my new dish next week.— JFARM
